外科医生张嘉儿（刘心悠饰）和Jessica、Amy是从小在孤儿院长大的好姐妹，走上社会后她们依然住在一起，亲密无间。某天，嘉儿接到律师的信，信中说她在马来西亚的嫲嫲（鲍起静饰）不久前离世，身后留给嘉儿一栋大宅作为遗产。小时候嘉儿在马来西亚住过，可是当她来到香港后却几乎忘记以前的事了。几经犹豫，嘉儿决定带着两个好友一同前往大马。在律师的安排下，三人来到了嫲嫲这栋古色古香的房子。 一切手续看起来十分顺利，可是诡异恐怖的事件接二连三地发生了。嫲嫲不在的房子里，似乎有什么东西四处游走，而嘉儿失落已久的记忆也渐渐恢复……。山田日後承認在開拍此片之前，已心諳渥美清的肺病步入末期，決定此章為最後一章，並安排由淺丘瑠璃子演的莉莉送寅次郎踏上人生的最後一程。分別15年後，兩人於如詩如畫的奄美大島重逢，感情依舊，鬥氣繼續，沒完沒了似的。正如山田所想，雖然系列必須完結，但始終不想為寅次郎的故事／人生劃上句號。結局如常開放，代表寅一直繼續他的旅程，日本人依然有夢。 公映後翌年，渥美清病逝，享年68歲，本片亦成為他的遺作。 Yamada knew before production began that Atsumi's health has deteriorated to such an extent that Tora-san to the Rescue would be the last film in the series.
